Reference and Information Assistance

The staff of the Maryland State Law Library prides itself on providing comprehensive legal research assistance. Staff is available to answer questions in person, via phone and by e-mail. Librarians assist both novice and sophisticated researchers in finding, using, and evaluating various legal resources.

The reference staff possesses over a century of research experience, gained in a diverse variety of settings, including university, news media and law firm libraries. Many staff members hold graduate degrees in library science; three have law degrees. While Library users frequently bring novel research questions to the information desk, staff members are skilled at locating unique resources in the Library's sizeable collections.

Every year, Library users ask nearly 6,000 research questions either in person or by phone. Additionally, librarians respond to over 4,000 e-mail questions annually, and almost 400 questions through chat. In spite of this significant volume, the reference staff ensures that each Library user receives individual attention. Furthermore, the wide-range of questions means that the Library staff is familiar with finding materials on most legal topics.
